SCOTTSDALE - Except for a certain taco eatery in downtown Scottsdale,
the color pink has come to mean one thing: a breast cancer benefit.
Cancer groups have used the rosy pastel to mark 10K races, luncheons and
most every other breast cancer raiser of consciousness or funds anywhere.
Scottsdale, yet again, will give the color a twist during October,
National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
That's when "The Pink Light District," a local breast cancer benefit,
is expected to debut, glowing as pink as its supporters want it to.
The "district," the canal bridge that connects the Scottsdale Waterfront
to the Southbridge neighborhood at Marshall Way in downtown Scottsdale,
will be illuminated one light bulb at a time, each bulb funded by a $20 donation.
Proceeds will benefit the Arizona Institute for Breast Health, a
Scottsdale group that provides free second opinions for breast cancer patients.
"Supporters can go online now and purchase a Pink Honor Light in honor or memory
of someone touched by breast cancer," Institute President Julie Robinson said.
The lights will be turned on during a ceremony Sept. 28 and will remain illuminated through the next month.
Individual and corporate sponsorships, starting at $500, are also available.
The Institute is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization and can be reached at
480-860-4200 or www.AIBH.org
